COURSE SYLLABUS

Please note: Students with scheduling conflicts can contact the instructor to make alternative arrangements.

In this introductory course the student will develop a working knowledge of data transduction and acquisition systems used in biomedicine. Course participants will study bio-transducers and the analog/digital circuitry for acquiring electrocardiogram, electromyogram, and blood pressure signals. This will include a thorough discussion of biomedical signal representation and compression methods. The student will also obtain a working knowledge of principles of amplification, filtering, multiplexing, digitization, and addressing subsystems. Finally, hardware relationships between data acquisition devices, signal generators, and timing constraints during retrieval of bio-data will be discussed. The excellent student is expected to keep current with the reading material and the lectures. Grading is based on 2 midterms and 1 final, counted equally. Optional: the student's class notes can be graded at the end of the semester for extra credit.
